From Paris, take a TGV train to Bellegarde. In less than three hours, you'll arrive at the foot of the mountains and a stone's throw from the Valserine River, a whitewater gem classified as a natural site. Before hopping on your bike, take the time to explore the surrounding area: the Pertes de la Valserine, where the river rushes through limestone rocks, offers an impressive sight.
From there, grab your bike (or rent one) and get pedaling! The road winds through gorges and forests to Champfromier, a typical village nestled in the Valserine Valley. Along the way, stop at the Marmites de Géant, natural cavities carved out by the force of water, accessible from the Valserine trail. If you're in an exploratory mood, a detour to Dinoplagne, about 15 km away (via hilly roads, feasible for the more athletic), will take you back... 150 million years, in the footsteps of a giant sauropod discovered in the Jura!
Perched on the heights, the Domaine des Géorennes welcomes you for a peaceful night in a natural setting, surrounded by forests, clearings, and panoramic views of the Alps. Tree house, transparent bubble, or tiny house: here, you sleep close to the stars in eco-friendly accommodation with incredible charm.
The next day, take a leisurely stroll back down to Bellegarde, following the Valserine river for one last immersion in this lush green setting. Depending on the season, you may encounter trout, waterfalls, and moss-lined trails: a perfect walk to slow down before heading back.
Board the TGV train for the return journey, your head filled with images of forests and mountain streams. A simple, wild and 100% car-free getaway: proof that all you need is a train, a bike and a little curiosity to feel like you're in a different world.
