Think Switzerland is only for those with deep pockets? Think again! Stroll through the old town, take a dip in the lake or river, climb to the top of the Uetliberg for panoramic views, discover free works of art... There are so many great ways to explore Zurich without breaking the bank. Here are 10 free or very affordable activities to include in your stay.

1. Stroll through the old town

Budget: free or minimal.

One of the best things to do in Zurich is to lose yourself in the narrow streets of the Altstadt (old town), admire the architecture, cross the Limmat River, and soak up the historic atmosphere, all without spending a penny!

Take the opportunity to stop at the town hall square, sit on a terrace and watch local life go by, or simply walk and admire the sights.

2. Climb the Uetliberg for the view

Budget: minimal.

The mountain-hill overlooking Zurich offers a superb view of the city, the lake, and the surrounding Alps. A beautiful hike that's free (and accessible by public transportation if you choose the train option).

3. Visit free or very affordable museums

Budget: moderate.

If you love culture, Zurich offers some great opportunities for those on a tight budget. Public artworks are free to view and there are numerous drinking fountains that are free to use. The Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich, for example, has free admission.

Budget tip: check for free admission days, or choose a “Zurich Card” pass to reduce costs.

4. Explore the Viadukt arches (Zurich West)

Budget: moderate.

Always free to access, this converted industrial area is home to shops, galleries, cafes, and markets under the arches of the railway viaduct.

It's a great place to stroll, people-watch, and enjoy a coffee without breaking the bank. In short, it's both budget-friendly and trendy: the perfect place for a creative and accessible break.

5. Swim in Lake Zurich or the Limmat River

Budget: free or minimal.

When summer comes, Zurich becomes a real haven of refreshment. The lake and the Limmat River offer areas for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the water.

Some natural pools (“badis”) or swimming areas are free or very inexpensive. Grab your swimsuit and go!

6. Admire the street art in the city

Budget: free.

Zurich is also a street art capital. You can freely explore numerous urban murals, particularly in Zurich West and certain converted industrial districts.

Bring good shoes and your camera, and get ready to be amazed!

7. Discover free parks, gardens, and viewpoints

Budget: free.

Zurich has many green spaces, most of which are free to visit: perfect for relaxing, reading, picnicking, or simply breathing in the fresh air.

For example, Lindenhof offers a free panoramic view in the heart of the city. It's a gentle way to get a feel for Zurich.

8. Visit the Bürkliplatz market

Budget: free or minimal.

Even if you don't spend anything, strolling through the Bürkliplatz market (on the lakeside) is a great way to soak up the atmosphere of Zurich life, browse the stalls, and discover local products.

9. Enjoy free festivals or concerts depending on the season

Budget: free.

In summer, Zurich offers outdoor concerts, free screenings, public events, and more. Perfect for those on a tight budget.

Tip: check the official calendar before your trip to plan your stay around a free event.

10. Get around smartly and take advantage of drinking fountains

Budget tip: use the 1,200 free drinking fountains to save money on drinks. And if you use the “Zürich Card” pass, you can get access to many museums at a reduced rate or for free!

So yes, Switzerland may seem expensive... but in Zurich, there is a wide range of free or very affordable activities to enjoy the city without stress. And to make the most of it... consider traveling to Zurich by train!
