Are you planning to spend a few days in Zurich and would like to explore the surrounding area for the day? That's great, because Zurich is one of the best starting points in Switzerland for many day trips accessible by train. On the agenda: mountains, lakes, heritage, culture, urban atmosphere, panoramic views... It only takes an hour (or less!) to completely change scenery, and all without a car. Here are our five favorite day trips around Zurich.
Less than an hour by train from Zurich, Lucerne is Switzerland in a nutshell: a lake surrounded by mountains, medieval charm, and flower-covered bridges. It's the perfect postcard destination, offering both culture and nature, and easily accessible from the main train station.

Cross the legendary Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), admire the painted facades of the old town, and pay homage to the Lion of Lucerne, carved in stone. Then extend your day with a stroll along the lake or a peaceful cruise on Lake Lucerne.
Be sure to check the train schedule to make sure you get back to Zurich in the evening.
Nicknamed the city of roses, Rapperswil is a 40-minute train ride from Zurich.
It's the perfect getaway, with medieval streets, lake views, and the atmosphere of a quiet little port.

Climb up to Rapperswil Castle to enjoy unobstructed views of Lake Zurich, stroll through the old town, and discover the famous rose gardens that have earned the town its nickname.
And for a more contemplative return journey, hop on a boat to Zurich for a relaxing trip with stunning views!
Utelberg is Zurich's iconic mountain, and it's just a stone's throw from the city center!
Accessible in 20 minutes by train (line S10), it offers a spectacular escape into nature without leaving the city.

Panorama de Zurich depuis le sommet de l’Uetlibberg
One of the easiest excursions to get out of the city and up into the hills, accessible by train and funicular, or, for the more athletic, by hiking.
Walk or take the train to the top, climb the observation tower, and admire the 360° view of Zurich, its lake, and the Alps. Our tip: bring a picnic or enjoy a coffee on the terrace at the summit station—the light at sunset is magical.
In just over an hour by train, Basel transports you to a whole new world, at the crossroads of three countries: Switzerland, France, and Germany.

It is the cultural capital of the country, with a rich historical heritage and a unique artistic atmosphere. A great option if you are looking for an excursion rich in architecture, museums, and Rhineland ambiance.
Among the must-sees: the old town, the Mittlere Brücke (cross it for a view of the Rhine), the old houses, and iconic museums such as the Kunstmuseum or the Tinguely Museum.
Our tip: in summer, join the locals for a float down the Rhine, a local tradition that's free of charge!
Located about 1 hour and 15 minutes by train from Zurich, St Gallen is a Baroque gem on a human scale, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perfect for a leisurely day of discovery.

Visit St. Gallen Abbey Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and its Baroque library, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Then take a stroll through the old town, admire its carved oriel facades (true works of art!) and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
In short, whether you opt for water (in Lucerne or Rapperswil), mountains (Uetliberg), urban architecture (Basel) or peaceful history (St. Gallen), you'll be spoiled for choice. So, when are you leaving?
