Leave Paris by high-speed train and begin your journey in Strasbourg, where you can explore its breathtaking cathedral, the Petite France district, and its canals. Then take the TER train to Schirmeck, nestled in the heart of the Bruche Valley. Here you can hop on your bike and tackle the climb to Champ du Feu, the highest peak in the Bas-Rhin (1,099 m). In summer, it's the perfect spot for hiking and panoramic views, and in winter for Nordic activities! Ride back down to Schirmeck, where the Alsace-Moselle Memorial awaits you, an immersive place that tells the region's turbulent history.
Then take the TER train to Rosheim (with a connection in Molsheim), a true Romanesque gem with its Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church. Continue on to Sélestat, renowned for its Humanist Library, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before ending your adventure in Colmar, the capital of the vineyards and a living postcard with its colorful houses and canals. With a glass of Riesling or a tarte flambée in hand, enjoy this last stop before taking the TGV back to Paris. Allow 3 to 5 days to alternate between cycling, sightseeing and gourmet breaks without rushing.
The cycle route from Schirmeck to Champ du Feu (the highest point in the Bas-Rhin) is a renowned climb in the Vosges mountains! Sporty cyclists love it for its natural setting and physical challenge. Please note that the route requires some preparation: there is a total elevation gain of 805 m, with an average gradient of 3.6% and steeper sections reaching up to 8%.
The road is open from April to November, ideally in summer when temperatures are milder.
For the most experienced cyclists, the route can be completed in 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes without stopping. For a more leisurely cycle tour at a relaxed pace, allow 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on breaks, weather, and your load.
To get back to Schirmeck from Champ du Feu, it's about 22.5 km on a winding but safe and pleasant road for cycle touring. By bike, it takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes, with an elevation gain of 805 meters. Going downhill (from Champ du Feu to Schirmeck), this is a classic route for reaching the Bruche Valley or the Schirmeck TER train station after climbing Champ du Feu. The road is winding but safe and pleasant for cycle touring.
