Want to discover Austria's cultural capital? Vienna is easily accessible by train from France and other major European cities. Here's our guide to a cultural weekend of classical music and gastronomy, without planes or cars.
Since the elimination of the Paris-Vienna direct night train by the end of 2025the easiest way to reach Vienna by train from Paris is to pass through Germany, generally via Munich or Frankfurt. The journey is made in TGV/ICE then by Austrian Railjet, for a total time of around 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. according to correspondence.
From Strasbourg connections are even simpler and faster (around 8 to 10 hours), often with just one connection.
From Lyon you usually have to go through Zurich or Frankfurt for a trip between 12 and 2pm.
For reservations, the most efficient way is often to look directly on ÖBB (Austrian Railways), which offers most European routes to Austria, as well as on SNCF Connect or Deutsche Bahn to compare schedules and rates.
In Vienna, there is no shortage of possibilities: the Naschmarkt offers a tour of Austrian gastronomy, while the Hofburg district reveals imperial history. Visit Schloss Schönbrunn is a must-see, with its French gardens and Baroque palace embodying the grandeur of Austria. The city breathes both the softness of Viennese cafés and the effervescent pace of the classical music concerts. All easily discovered on foot or by streetcar.
