How to reach Madrid by train?

There is no direct route between France and Madrid: the trip always involves a connection, most often in Barcelona.

From Paris: A direct TGV to Barcelona Sants (about 6 hours and 50 minutes), then a Renfe AVE to Madrid Atocha (a little over 3 hours and 15 minutes). Allow a little over 10 hours total, including one transfer.
From Lyon: A direct AVE train to Barcelona Sants (about 4 hours and 50 minutes), then a connecting train to Madrid. Allow about 8 to 9 hours in total—one of the fastest routes to the Spanish capital from France.
From Bordeaux: Head directly to Hendaye (about 2 hours and 40 minutes), then take a short connection by regional train (Euskotren, a few minutes) or by taxi to the Irun train station on the Spanish side, before boarding a Renfe Alvia train to Madrid (about 6 hours). Allow about 9 to 9.5 hours in total: this is the geographically most direct route, even though it’s less straightforward to book with a single ticket than the route via Barcelona.
